There have been many reports in the newspapers, from police, agricultural organisations and insurance companies over the last year about the increase in the number of oil and fuel thefts. These are not just reports by homeowners who have had heating oil stolen from their oil tanks but also rural businesses such as farms, schools, churches and lorry depots.

Fuel and oil prices are steadily rising, which is pushing an increasing number of people into fuel poverty and making home heating oil and diesel fuel into “liquid gold” and a prime target for thieves. So what can be done to safeguard your home or business?

Last week, BBC One’s The One Show was the first to bring this issue into mainstream national media. Farmers and homeowners have two concerns; how they safeguard their fuel supply and how they cope with rising fuel prices. They discussed various preventative measures for combating oil theft including; locking vehicles in a secure building overnight, installing security cameras on the premises, deterring thieves using a guard dog and even the “smart option” of a “Sonic Sensor” or Sonic Signalman as it is correctly known, an electronic fuel monitor.

Earlier this week, there was a feature on oil theft on BBC Radio Gloucestershire’s breakfast show, which included an interview with local businessman and security expert Roman Cooper from Allcooper. Again, the discussion highlighted, among other things, the value of using electronic wireless system for remotely monitoring fuel levels.

First alert for oil theft

In both programmes, it was clear that those interviewed had no knowledge of the theft of their oil until long after the event. Initially, their concerns had been raised when the radiators did not work – which led to the immediate and reasonable assumption that the boiler was broken and a plumber was called out. Of course, the boiler was fine but the oil tank was empty. The message here is check your oil and fuel levels regularly

The cost of oil/fuel theft

The cost can be high. Not only will the tank probably have to be replaced, as well as the oil, but there is also the cost of cleaning up. Sadly, oil theft may not be covered by home insurance There is also an environmental cost, which can be high as oil leaks not only pollute the ground, they can also leach into groundwater.

How Oil Tank Alarms Work

There are various oil tank gauges or oil tank alarms currently available. The latest technology or Sonic Signalman as we refer to it, can monitor the levels of either diesel in a fuel storage and dispensing tank, or kerosene in a bunded heating oil tank. It has GSM capability that can send text alerts to the owner if there is a drop in fuel or oil levels. This notifies of a potential fuel theft in real time. In other words, it provides a means for the owner to monitor, constantly, their oil tank supplies. The wireless electronic monitor is suitable for any existing or new oil tank installation, whether it’s a bunded heating oil tank or a single skin oil tank.

You may want to know if your oil tank is suitable for this technology. The simple answer is yes, any plastic or steel oil tank can be suitable, depending on the condition of the oil tank- in other words as long as there are no leaks or the tank is showing signs of wear or tear due to age.

Servicing and Maintaining Your Oil Tank

Clearly, with oil being such a precious commodity (and of course any losses can be devastating) it is more important than ever that your oil tank is in good condition and your oil boiler is working efficiently. With regular maintenance both will run more efficiently and cheaply. What’s more regular maintenance will prolong the life of the overall heating system. Through our Titan Accredited Installer Network we are offering a FREE, NO OBLIGATION survey of where your oil tank is situated and advise, if necessary, on oil tank replacements to help secure your oil supply.

To find out more about the free survey and the latest innovation in oil tank security, including oil alarm functionality and SMS text alerts, please contact Kingspan Environmental and talk to a member of our team email: enquiry@kingspanenv.com or call +44(0) 28 3836 4400

The innovative technology developed by Kingspan Environmental will be installed by Carillion Energy, in 20 oil tanks in homes in Dungannon, Camlough and Newcastle for a period of three months in a “pay as you go” pilot scheme to help homeowners budget for oil fills.

Charles Burns, Commercial Director, said, “We are delighted that we can road test our Fuelserv solution in our own back yard and that people in Northern Ireland could be the first in the world to see the benefits.

Buying the oil is a very simple process – you buy however much you want to use and Fuelserv then releases this amount from your tank.

All this is monitored by a small wall mounted unit inside your home, which will allow you to keep track of how much you’ve spent and how much you’ve used. For the householder’s peace of mind, there are also a number of anti-theft alerts and alarms built into Fuelserv, that we will also be testing.”

Jillian Ferris, Client and Stakeholder Director at Carillion Energy Services said, “We decided to team up with Kingspan Environmental to find a pay as you go method that works for people in fuel poverty as well as for those householders who want more control over their energy usage.”

Visiting the home of Tracey Doherty from Dungannon, where the technology is being tested, Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland, said, “Pay as you go systems for gas and electricity have been around for some time and it is very exciting that the world’s first pay as you go oil metering system has been produced here and will be piloted in Northern Ireland.

For those limited in their choice of fuel, this technology has the potential to offer a means to budget for spend on oil and a chance to avoid the high costs of emergency drums. I am very keen to see the results of this pilot, and, if successful, will be looking at the possibilities for incorporating this kind of innovation into future energy efficiency schemes”.

Kingspan GSP (General Steel Products) has just completed a substantial contract for Wexford based haulage company Whitty Transport, which saw the Taghman company purchase an extra 60,000 litre bunded tank for its plant.

The additional 60,000 litres capacity tank, will add to its existing over-ground storage facility. Kingspan GSP project-managed the delivery and installation of the new system and ensured that the company’s specifications were met with minimal disruption.

Used as a fueling facility for Whitty Transport’s haulage fleet that consists of 14 trucks, the new 60,000 litre bunded tank not only enables the company to store a larger amount of fuel but it also enables the company to manage it’s fuel consumption more effectively. Also should any fuel be contaminated the second tank allows them to contain the problem quickly whilst still having a full tank in reserve.

After researching fuel containment companies in Ireland previously, Whitty Transport who are the only haulage company that operates for Irish Pride Bread, found that once again Kingspan GSP was the best manufacturer to facilitate the company’s needs.

James Whitty, Owner of Whitty Transport, says:

“We are extremely pleased with our decision to increase our diesel fuel storage capacity. After the successful implementation of our first tank by Kingspan GSP we were keen to extend this relationship and asked them to oversee the installation of our second tank. The rationale behind the additional tank is that it not only enables us to increase our capacity but allows us to take advantage of buying in bulk should the price of diesel increase. In light of current credit crunch this has further cemented our decision to purchase another storage facility.”

“We are able to monitor our fuel consumption by having both tanks filled, and then through using one tank at a time, we are able to see how much fuel is being used throughout the year. It also enables us to see which fuel suppliers are giving us the best value for money. To date our first tank has already paid for itself and we envisage the new tank will also have paid for itself in the coming months. The economies of scale gained really enabled us to save money.”

“We are extremely pleased to report that the professionalism and expertise demonstrated by the Kingspan GSP team was exceptional. Kingspan GSP worked on the preparation, planning and building of the materials, thus, allowing for a remarkably quick turnaround time of one day.”

Jonathan Heasley, from Kingspan GSP, was responsible for the project. Jonathan commented:

“At Kingspan GSP, we have the knowledge and experience to create client specific solutions and to drive the job forward from start to finish, allowing for a seamless approach. The company was thrilled, to once again, work with Whitty Transport and it’s excellent to hear the positive responses from our customers.”

As one of Ireland’s and Europe’s leading fuel containment companies, Kingspan GSP’s expertise and knowledge in the sector has led to a host of developments for the company. From the customer’s point—of-view, commissioning Kingspan GSP to oversee the whole project brings piece-of-mind, reassurance and exceptional safety standards to the importance of fuel containment.

Based in Co. Monaghan, Kingspan GSP is part of Kingspan Environmental. Kingspan’s Environmental & Renewables business is made up of environmental and pollution control product groups, all operating under the Kingspan Group of Companies. Kingspan is recognised throughout the construction industry for its commitment to innovation, design, quality and technical expertise.

In 2008 Masterlink Logistics completed a new 75,000 sq ft warehouse facility on their premises in the M20 Business Park on the Limerick road in Mallow.

As part of the move, they decided to tackle their very high fuel costs by changing from using fuel cards for drivers, to installing a bulk storage tank on their new site.

“We have a fleet of 12 vehicles ranging from small 7.5 tonne trucks up to large articulated units and we found using the fuel card system very uneconomical,” said Liam Meade of Masterlink Logistics.

“We wanted to implement a much smarter way of consuming fuel that would allow us to analyse in detail how we are using energy and how we can be more efficient,” adds Meade

“When you run a logistics company, fuel is a very significant daily cost and any saving you can make on an individual driver will make a major impression on the bottom line at the end of the year.”

Masterlink chose to install a fuel management system from Kingspan GPS, consisting of a bunded tank with an internal pump house and a fuel management system linked back to their internal computer system.

“Now for the first time ever we have a smart system that enables us to work out accurately the cost per mile, per vehicle and per driver. This makes it much easier to control costs, and to make accurate assessments of what running costs will be,” said Meade.

Masterlink uses 25,000 litres of fuel a month. The investment in the system cost €13,500 and Meade says it was money well spent. “We will have the investment paid back within 9 months through greater fuel efficiency and it is delivering a massive boost towards ongoing cost reductions.”

They completely overhauled their fuel consumption when they moved to their new state of the art facility outside Naas in 2009.

“We decided to invest in the Kingspan fuel management system, because we wanted to improve control, efficiency, and reduce our very high fuel bill,” says Irish Commercials Parts Manager Pat Conlon.

Irish Commercials has an extensive fleet of support vehicles ranging from Delivery Vans at the small end, Breakdown Support Vans, right up to articulated trucks.

They installed a bunded 20,000 litre double compartment tank, so that they can store 15,000 litres of diesel and 5,000 litres of the environmental fuel additive ad blue, combined in one tank unit. Each company vehicle is now equipped with its own key fob for dispensing fuel on site which is obvisiouly far more effient and because of the software provided within the Fuel Tech system, we are now in a position to analysis the performance and costs relating to each individual vehicle. Prior to the installation of the Kingspan “Package” on site we were using fuel cards from forecourt distributors.

Irish Commercials are now also making considerable revenue savings. “We are saving on average, close to 5 cent a litre, and we will have our initial investment in the tank recovered in 6 years. I would highly recommend any fuel intensive business to give careful consideration to this system,” says Conlon.
